MD/MHI Program

It provides a single year in addition to the four years of training for the Medical Degree that will prepare medical students to understand the applications of information technology in medicine and prepare them for leadership positions in the area. The joint degree program provides exactly the same training as the MHI program with the exception of the Capstone course which will be replaced by an equivalent elective Medical School clerkship.

For general information about the program follow the links on the left of this page. Information specific to the MD/MHI program is give below.

Program of Study:

This program is designed for and limited to University of Minnesota medical students who are interested in pursuing this program of study after their second or third year of Medical School. The program is intended to be completed by enrolling for the Fall and following Spring Semesters. If the student chooses to enroll in the Fall following their second year, he or she could complete at least two clerkship rotations before beginning the program and could resume clerkships after end of classes in the Spring. If the student chooses to use the 26 weeks of their free time for this purpose, they could theoretically complete the MD program in the normal amount of time. The schedule of required courses is the same as the full-time course of study (see link on left) with the following exception:

During the Clerkship Years (the last two years of medical education)

LAMP 7195 – Health Informatics Elective (six weeks full time - equivalent to 3 cr) replaces the Capstone Project.

Admissions

medical students are required to only submit the standard graduate school application form. To provide the balance of the information, they must authorize the Medical School to provide to the Graduate School a copy of their medical school application including all relevant official transcripts and suubmit the same Statement of Purpose as other candidates. In lieu of letters of recommendation, they may substitute the letters of recommendation in their application file plus one recommendation from a Medical School faculty member. Medical students will be reviewed separately from other applicants to the MHI program and a minimum of five positions will be reserved for qualified medical students in each class.

Enrollment and Registration

MD/MHI students will most likely take the coursework for the joint program between their second and third years of Medical School. This time represents a natural break between their didactic education and clinical skills training. During that period of time students will be enrolled in the graduate program and not in the MD program. As such they will be subject to the same tuition and fees and the rest of the students in the program.

All medical students must register for the full time course loads in each semester in order to remain in the program. If, for some reason, a student is not able to complete one or more of these courses within the required semester, they will be given an Incomplete grade and required to complete the coursework before they can take the LAMP 7195 course to complete the program.

Student Financial Support

The NLM training grant provides four one-year predoctoral and eight two-year postdoctoral stipends and tuition reimbursements for health professionals seeking training in the field of health informatics. There are additional funds available from the National Library of Medicine to training grant program specifically for support of medical students seeking informatics training. It is anticipated that there will be funding for up to five MD/MHI students annually.
